More Progress Photos of the Trout

We almost finished the trout yesterday… there’s just a wee bit of the tail left, which Mya is working on now. Today should be the end of the detail work on the mosaic sign. I started the lettering last night and should be done with that by this evening also. Mya did such a good job on blending the colors leading into the tail that I’ve decided to let her finish that part while I work on the letters.

I’ll be really bummed when she heads home for the school year. Not only is she a kick ass shop assitant, but we’ve just been having a lot of fun working together on projects.

I got a call from Wheelock & Sons Welding this morning, letting me know that they’ve found someone who can laser cut the steel for the sign, working from my dimensioned drawing. I do all my drawings in Adobe Illustrator on a Mac, and although AI exports drawing in .dxf and .dwg formats, I’ve still not found anyone who can work with the files in the CAD software that drives CNC cutting machines. Sigh. Some day I’m gonna have to invest in some CAD software for the Mac, I guess. On a job like this, the tolerances are just too precise for hand cutting.

So, we should have the steel structure within a week or two, I hope. At that point, I’ll install the trout and lettering and infill with the black tile. With any luck, I’ll actually have the sign done in time to install it before the Alden Art Fair.
