The image is carved out of the paint— I painted the whole sheet of steel, and then scratched away the paint to reveal the figure. What doesn’t come through well in the photo is the rich texture that this process created. The mask is painted on a separate sheet of steel and then nailed on. I’ve always been amazed at how closely the burl in this hunter’s staff resembles a dog skull. The rope at the top of the hunter’s staff came from a mop.
