19 May Big Bowl O’ Zen Sculptural Firebowl at Georgetown Brewing Company
Ingrid at Georgetown Brewing Company, in Seattle, WA sent me these great photos of one of my Big Bowl O’ Zen Sculptural Firebowls installed at their recently expanded tasting room. The tasting room features exposed steel and concrete, a bar-top fabricated with salvaged wood from the old Rainer Brewery, and a glass wall where visitors can view the brewing process.
The simplicity of the Zen bowl fits the design of this modern space perfectly. Original concrete walls were removed and replaced with sliding steel panels that serve as a dramatic entry to the tasting room. Steel planters extend the rust color throughout the space. I especially like how the designer intentionally left markings from the steel yard on the plate steel used to make the planters— I would never have had the grit to do that but it gives a great sense of history and truth to the materials.
Steel steps and furniture made with steel and timber also tie the design together. Everything about the design of the outdoor space pays homage to the building’s industrial roots and history. The architecture firm responsible for the renovation and expansion is Olson Kundig, which is exciting to me as I have been a huge fan of their work over the years. The enormous glass door/window in their Chicken Point Cabin project just slays me. I consider it to be a huge honor to have my work included in one of their designs.
The warm colors of the steel and the wood keep the design from feeling stark, and bring a cozy feel to the corner where the firebowl sits.
